Event Description:

Twice per year, we skip our regularly scheduled meeting to do a community service project. For this meeting, we'll be doing cleanup of grave stones at Lakeview Cemetary.

The Lakeview Cemetery Restoration Project plan for 2023 is to clean as many of the 283 graves as we can, pay for as much restoration and leveling as we can raise funds. The earliest grave in Lakeview Cemetery is in the 1830s, so the cemetery has been around for approximately 190 years.  The hill was carved out of a farm donated for the community cemetery.  The Lakeview Cemetery Restoration Project is a community effort, led by the Daughters of the American Revolution Sashabaw Plains Chapter and the township government.

Buried in the oldest sections of the cemetery are two Revolutionary War veterans, a great granddaughter of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, several Civil War veterans, including Henry Hirst, who owned the mill in Clarkston.  Henry left his family at 31 years old to enlist in the Union Army Cavalry.  While he fought for one year, he was taken prisoner and spent two years in a Confederate Army prison camp before being returned to his regiment.  At the time he enlisted his children were five and six years old.  He returned to Clarkston in 1865 and back to becoming the miller at the Clarkston Mill.  He died in 1874 at the young age of 43.
